Countryside has three workshops coming up in April that will help you get started with raising your own chickens and veggies, as well as important information regarding soil health.

Backyard Chicken Basics: Whether raised for eggs or meat, chickens can be a beautiful addition to a backyard, and a great way to teach children about the local food system. Lorree Cummings of Stone Cottage Farm & Garden will teach you everything you need to know to add some feathered friends to your yard this year. This workshop will be held on Saturday, April 12 10 a.m. - noon at Stone Cottage Farm & Garden. Cost is $30 per person and registration is required.

Starting Your Own Vegetable Garden: You know what they say - there's nothing like a homegrown tomato! Heather Walters from Basket of Life Farm shares her years of farming experience to take you through all the steps of adding a garden to your home. Beginning with soil preparation and taking you all the way through dealing with pests, you'll leave prepared and excited to start planting! This workshop will be held on Thursday, April 24 from 7 – 9 p.m. at Church in the Valley, 2241 Everett Road, Peninsula, OH. Cost is $30 per person and registration is required.

Soil Fertility Workshop: This workshop is being presented in conjunction with Summit Soil & Water Conservation District and The Ohio State University Extension. Small farms and specialty crop farms face a number of conservation related issues. A day can't go by without picking up a newspaper and reading a headline shouting about nutrient loads impacting our waterways. Come to this Soil Fertility workshop and learn the basics about soil texture, structure, fertility and health. You'll learn how to increase soil fertility and build your soils without impacting the water quality of our lakes. You'll walk away with an understanding of soil fertility based on university research such as nutrient cycling and dynamics, soil aggregation, the soil food web and cover crops. Finally, you'll learn which cover crops to plant and how to use them for your specialty crop production and soil resource limitations. Steve Prebonick, Steve Culman and Ann Brandt will be presenting. Tuesday April 29th, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Meeting Hall in the Church in the Valley 2241 Everett Road, Peninsula, OH. Cost is $20 per person and registration is required.

Please register for these workshops and other events at www.cvcountryside.org or contact Julie Gabelman at info@cvcountryside.org.
